Junior League of Lubbock members work diligently to make our fundraisers and signature projects a success for the community. The annual Shining Star and Sustainer of the Year Awards are given to the women who embody everything the Junior League of Lubbock stands for.
Shining Star: Voluntarism - Sarah Bevers
The Shining Star Award for Voluntarism is awarded to an active member who goes beyond their placement duties to improve the Junior League of Lubbock, while their attitude and leadership serve as an example for other League members. The 2017-2018 Shining Star Award for Voluntarism was presented to Sarah Bevers.
Sarah’s leadership, willingness to speak up, to be involved, and take initiative are just a few of the things that make her stand out. Sarah’s work experience, education, and volunteer experience with other non-profit organizations made a tremendous difference in the League’s financial processes. Sarah is the Director of Finance at United Supermarkets, is a board member at the Salvation Army of Lubbock, and Treasurer at the YWCA of Lubbock. Sarah served as Member at Large Finance in 2017-2018 and Fundraising and Donations Chairman in 2018-2019 for the League. Thank you, Sarah, for your leadership and commitment.
Shining Star: Impacting the Community - Leslie Collins
The Shining Star Award for Impacting our Community is awarded to an active member who has made noteworthy contributions to the community through exceptional service or through significant accomplishments in her career. The 2017-2018 Shining Star Award for Impacting our Community was presented to Leslie Collins.
Leslie is a leader in her career and within the Junior League of Lubbock. When serving as Food2Kids Chairman, Leslie helped raise over 50,000 sleeves up Pop-tarts to include in weekend food sacks for children in the Lubbock community. She dedicated herself to the program by visiting schools, speaking with teachers and counselors, and recruiting outside volunteers to help with stuffing shifts. Leslie’s leadership carries over to her work where she serves as Senior Director for Academic Affairs at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. She is Bylaws Chairman for the 2018-2019 League year and will serve as Community Impact Vice President in 2019-2020. Leslie, thank you for the leadership and passion you show to the Food2Kids program and the children in the Lubbock community.
Shining Star: Developing Potential - Brittany Furgeson
The Shining Star Award for Developing Potential is awarded to a provisional or active member with less than three years of service. This recipient is recognized as having exceptional potential to lead our membership and our community. The 2017-2018 Shining Star Award for Developing Potential was presented to Brittany Furgeson.
Brittany was a first-year Active Member when she was asked to be the Camp Leader for Kids in Kitchen’s Camp Healthy Kids. She stepped up to the plate and organized a successful camp that dozens of kids enjoyed! Brittany is organized, committed, and has a passion for the youth in our community. Brittany is a teacher at Evans Middle School and is serving as SPARK Assistant Chairman for the 2018-2019 League year to help young girls develop their leadership skills. Thank you, Brittany, for your leadership.
