Focus Area: Children
By selecting Children as a Junior League of Lubbock Focus Area, our mission by the year 2012, is to improve the quality of life for children in Lubbock and surrounding communities. Food 2 Kids The Junior League of Lubbock, in association with the South Plains Food Bank (SPFB) and Lubbock Independent School District (LISD), has created a new program called Food 2 Kids (F2K) which is modeled after America's Second Harvest Backpack ProgramTM. Sacks of food will be sent home on Fridays with children identified as being potentially at high risk for suffering from hunger during the weekend. The sacks will contain such things as peanut butter, shelf-stable milk, juice, fruit snacks, pop-top cans of spaghetti, cereal, nut snacks, pop-tarts, etc. Kids in the Kitchen This program was developed in response to alarming statistics that an increasingly large percentage of children and adolescents in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom and the United States are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight, the leagues will provide materials and educational initiatives to help families address the urgent issues of poor nutrition and childhood obesity. These issues are substantially increasing the risks that adolescents will develop health problems such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
